4 Simple Ways to Save on Your Electricity Bill
Monthly hydro bills are never fun to receive, especially in the hot summer months when we have our air conditioners on blast 24/7. Luckily there are some easy ways to save money without cutting corners.
Here are four of our favourite ways to keep our utility bills under control:
Out with the old, in with the new.
Old appliances, like refrigerators and furnaces, use much more energy than their modern-day counterparts. This is because the past few years have seen a swell in energy efficient appliances, not only is it trendy but it is environmentally responsible. Local governments even go so far as offering tax incentives for these updated units. If you are still holding on to that dryer from the 1960s, it’s time to let go. Invest in newer appliances and you will save money in the long run.
Unplug what you don’t need.
Unlike our first suggestion, this option involves no money down. Just ensure to unplug the items that aren’t in use. This includes phone chargers, TVs, video game consoles, and computers. Anything that can be turned off, should be turned off and unplugged until it’s needed again. Appliances that are turned off but still plugged in will still use energy. Think of these items like your kitchen faucet. You don’t want it dripping and wasting water while you’re away, so make sure it’s completely off before you leave the room.
Put the lights down low.
On average, lighting accounts for 12% of a homeowner’s utility bills. Cut a chunk out of that percentage by utilizing devices such as dimmer switches and light occupancy sensors. That way you’ll still have access to all the light you need, without wasting that energy on empty rooms. Timers are also available for this purpose.
Get a programmable thermostat.
Programmable thermostats work in a similar way in that you’ll only be using the energy you absolutely need. If you’re away for the day, program that thermostat for a lower temperature, same as when you’re sleeping. Each degree can save you a little bit of cash here and there. Over time you could be saving 10-23% each year!
