LED Lighting: The Basics
Our job is to make sure that you have the best possible electrical products and services. We offer state of the art technology for homes and offices that will improve energy use and keep our clients happy.
That’s why we want to talk about LED lighting and what that could mean for you.
What Is LED?
LED, or Light Emitting Diode, is a type of lighting that passes electrical currents through a microchip in order to illuminate tiny light sources inside each bulb. The result is visible light. To avoid overheating, the heat produced by the LEDs is absorbed into a heat sink. This thermal management is to thank for the huge popularity of LED lighting. LED can be used in a variety of applications.
LED lights are between 80-90% more efficient than traditional lighting. Here’s what that high efficiency can do for you:
- Decreases greenhouse gas emissions: The reduced demand from power plants means that less energy will be wasted. This makes the switch to LED an environmentally responsible one.
- Easy disposal: Fluorescent strip lights contain mercury, and as such need to be disposed of responsibly. LED lighting, on the other hand, contains no toxic components and can be thrown away without special concern.
- Better quality: LEDs do not waste energy by emitting light in all different directions like their traditional counterparts. Rather, they focus on lighting only what is required. You don’t really need to light up the ceiling, do you?
- Longer life span: Because of their thermal management, LED lights can last up to six times longer than other types of lighting. That means less trips to the store to pick up replacement bulbs.
